Dear American Legion Family members and friends,
It’s a special time of the year when we pause to give thanks for our blessings.
This week, many of us will gather with family members, friends and other loved ones. We’ll feast on special food, enjoy each other’s company and express gratitude for the freedom in which we all live.
I treasure this time of the year when many of us demonstrate why it is truly better to give than to receive. Here are some ways that American Legion members can give this holiday season:
• The American Legion will be encouraging members and supporters to contribute toward our support of veterans, servicemembers and their families during Giving Tuesday. Visit legion.org on Tuesday, Nov. 29, and join our one-day goal of raising $220,000.
• Reach out to a veteran who may be lonely or need some assistance. While our Buddy Check program can be done at any time of the year, the holidays are a great opportunity to reach out. Many veterans feel isolated and depressed. A visit or phone call by a brother or sister in arms would definitely lift their spirits.
• Volunteer at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen, or provide a meal for a homeless veteran.
• Literally give some of yourself to help a stranger in need. The American Legion has been a proud supporter of the American Red Cross blood donation drives for nearly a century. Please consider donating blood, if you are eligible, to help a fellow American.
Thank you for what you do every day. You have my gratitude not just today or on Thanksgiving but every day of the year.
